“Education in the arts is essential to students’ intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth and well-being. Experiences in the arts – in dance, drama, music, and visual arts – play a valuable role in helping students to achieve their potential as learners and to participate fully in their community and in society as a whole.”
~ The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8: The Arts – Revised, 2009, p.3.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board offers a wide range of programs for the Arts, delivered by both generalist and specialist teachers. At the elementary level, students are to receive 150 minutes per teaching cycle for the Arts. Each term, three of the four strands in the Arts curriculum are to be taught and assessed. By the end of the second term, all four strands must have been covered. At the secondary level, students are required to take a minimum of one course in the Arts in order to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Those students wishing to attain an Ontario Secondary School Certificate have a choice between one course in the Arts or Technology. Students may further choose courses in the Arts based on their interests, achievement and post-secondary goals, as well as the pathways they are pursuing.
