Making our Schools Accessible
OCDSB > About OCDSB > Making our Schools Accessible

Making our Schools Accessible

Accessibility means creating an environment in which systemic barriers to the full participation of people with disabilities are reduced or eliminated through reasonable efforts so that there is equitable access for all (e.g. , services, systems, and policies). To assist us in our goal of accessibility an Accessibility Plan Working Group has been created comprised of internal staff representatives and external members of the public representing diverse needs.

The OCDSB supports the principles of providing accessible customer service to individuals with disabilities and is developing policies, practices, and procedures as outlined in the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service. The core principles are dignity, independence, integration, and equality of opportunity.

We are actively seeking ways to remove barriers that may occur in some facilities, in receiving information, in communicating, or through systemic, attitudinal, and behavioural barriers. In November 2009, the Board approved Policy P.121.Gov  on Accessibility and the accompanying Procedure PR.666.GOV.  This policy and the procedures can be made available in alternate formats upon request.

Policy Highlights

Protocols for Customer service

Protocols have been developed to provide the best service to disabled individuals.

School and administrative staff, volunteers, and contractors are being provided training on customer service standards. Staff has been provided with instructions for interacting and communicating with individuals with different disabilities, for interacting with support persons, and with people using service animals. They are now more aware of different types of resources and assistive devices that can support and enhance people’s access and are willing to accommodate those.

Notice of any disruption in service will be posted on the website wherever possible and also at the specific location. Every attempt will be made to call clients/organizer.

We welcome your feedback as we work together toward these important goals. Please submit your questions and comments to us via email: accessibility@ocdsb.ca including your name, telephone number, and school name OR use our Customer Feedback Form  or call 613-596-8211. Your email will be forwarded to the appropriate department for a response. We are open to your suggestions.
