Beacon Hill - Ottawa East Secondary Accommodation Study

Board Decision – December 15, 2009

At its meeting on December 15, 2009 the Board approved the following motion regarding the Beacon Hill-Ottawa East Secondary Accommodation Study:

THAT the following motion be referred to staff for further consideration:

THAT staff develop a comprehensive plan to address long-term enrolment issues and the needs of students and the community by addressing but not limiting themselves to the following recommendations of the Beacon Hill-Ottawa East ARC:

a. No closure of the schools included in this ARC process;
b. Board to engage in strategic long-term planning informed by comprehensive diagnostics and active consultation with the community;
c. Conduct consultation with communities served by low enrolment schools to identify and resolve root causes of enrolment issues;
d. Add program pathways to schools with low enrolment to increase appeal and viability;
e. Add non-semestered options to low enrolment schools;
f. Review impact of previous and future boundary changes; and
g. Provide additional funding to schools with low enrolment so programs can be enhanced.

The Board also approved a minor boundary change involving the Gloucester High School and Osgoode Township High School attendance boundaries, as follows (effective September 2010):

THAT the southern portion of the current Gloucester High School attendance boundary, as shown on the map (attached as Appendix A), be changed such that area students have the option to attend either Gloucester High School or Osgoode Township High School.

Accommodation Review Committee Options

On April 21th, 2009, the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) held a Public Meeting at Rideau High School to present options to the community.

The ARC is looking for your input and comments on these Options. All input/feedback will be gathered and used to assist the ARC in formulating a recommendation report which is scheduled to be received by the Board of Trustees on June 15th, 2009.
In the fall, Board staff will present their recommendation report, followed by public delegations and Trustee debate. Final Trustee decision is expected in December 2009 for implementation by September 2010. Refer to the Timelines section for more details.
