Workshops 2011–2012

TOYOTA EVERGREEN AND OCDSB ARE OFFERING FREE WORKSHOPS TO GREEN YOUR SCHOOL GROUNDS

Join us for a free series of inspiring workshops designed to help you plan a successful and sustainable school ground greening project. Workshops are open to all Ottawa schools and daycares that want to engage their students in creating healthy, stimulating play and learning spaces. Teachers, administrators, parents, custodians, students and community volunteers are all welcome.

All workshops run from 7–9pm Lester B Pearson High School, 2072 Jasmine Crescent Gloucester K1J 8M5

Getting Started - Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Surveying People and the Grounds - Wednesday, December 7, 2011

Find out how to gather the information you need about your site and the people who use it, and conduct class-by-class brainstorming sessions to design your project. Includes suggestions for involving children.

Site Design: Getting From Here to There - Wednesday, February 8, 2012

A large floor model will demonstrate what information you will need to gather before you can create your plan. Learn about how results from school surveys are used to design a project. Participants are invited

to describe their school ground and share their site plans, photos and any ideas they have for involving children and enlisting volunteers from the school community.

Sustaining Your Project - Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Begin with the end in mind. How will your project be maintained? Who will care for it? Increase the long-term success of your project by finding out about school board responsibilities, written maintenance agreements, design tips for low-maintenance landscapes, "passing the torch," and maintaining your site through the curriculum.

Planting and Maintaining your Trees - Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Greening teams typically devote a considerable amount of time to planning, fundraising and planting, but all too often neglect to plan for the essential follow-up tree care and maintenance. Find out how to plant, protect and care for your trees. Learn about how quickly trees can decline when they are not properly protected while the mature bark is developing, and what you can do to ensure their protection remains a priority for your school. Also learn about how to improve the health of existing trees on your grounds and how to restore a neglected greening project.

Financing Your Project - Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Money doesn’t grow on trees, but trees can attract money! You will learn how to create a budget and about proven strategies for bringing dollars to your project (funding sources and grant application tips), as well as simple and effective fundraising ideas. You will also learn how to tap into sources of free materials, in-kind support and expertise within your community.
