The OCDSB Announces the Resignation of Director of Education
August 25, 2010 Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board announced today that Dr. Lyall M. Thomson has resigned his position as Director of Education. Dr. Thomson has held the position since September 1, 2008 until his resignation, effective August 31, 2010.
Dr. Thomson has resigned for personal reasons and noted “This was a difficult decision to leave OCDSB. During the past two years, I have met many employees of the school district and have seen them in action at their schools or work places. They work hard for the betterment of the students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. The students are in good hands and the parents should feel confident in the school district.”
School Board Chair, Cathy Curry said, Executive Superintendent, Barrie Hammond has assumed the responsibilities of the Director of Education in the interim.
Chair Curry added, “I wish Dr. Thomson all the best. I also want to reassure the community that the Board will move as quickly as possible to find a new Director of Education. However, in the interim, we will be well served by Mr. Hammond. He has over 42 years experience as a teacher, a principal, and a superintendent in the Ottawa region. Mr. Hammond is a respected educator, who understands the needs of the district, puts students first, and is a man of great character.”
Superintendent Hammond added, “I am honoured to have been asked to step into this position. This is an exciting time of the year as all 146 of our schools are getting ready to open their doors next week. On behalf of everyone in the district, it is my privilege to welcome students and staff to the start of the new school year.”
Classes begin Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
