WOODROFFE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN CIVIC AWARD
On Wednesday, January 20, General Learning Program (GLP) and Dual Support Program (DSP) students from Woodroffe High School were recognized at Ottawa City Hall by Mayor Larry O’Brien and Councillor Maria McRae for their efforts in the 2009 “Cleaning the Capital Campaign”. Mayor O’Brien and Councillor McRae thanked the students for their contribution to the program and for their commitment to volunteerism and community service.
Under the supervision of teachers Matt Blackwell, Lyn Addison and Jamie Hughson, the students picked up trash and cleared detritus on October 8 in Frank Ryan and Elmhurst parks. In addition, the Senior GLP class completed at least a dozen yard clean-ups for seniors in the local community during the fall. There was no charge to the homeowners as tools and supplies were provided by the school and the Carlingwood Canadian Tire. Donations were accepted on behalf of the National Capital YMCA/YWCA.
All in all, it was an enriching experience for the Woodroffe Tigers involved. The students and staff are eager to become involved again next fall and they hope that their efforts will highlight the personal and communal benefits of volunteerism.
