Charities Benefit from D. Roy Kennedy Public School’s Musical — Human Heart
Thursday, June 10 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. | 919 Woodroffe Avenue | Tickets $5
June 8, 2010 Ottawa, ON — D. Roy Kennedy Public School invites the public to open their hearts and their minds and in the process help two charities. Grade 8 French Immersion classes are presenting the musical Human Heart based on the work of the Kielburger brothers with proceeds going to Free the Children and Right to Play charities.
The Kielburger brothers — Marc and his brother Craig, have been meeting and exchanging views with celebrities, world thinkers, and thousands of kids and adults on children's rights issues, as well as peace-building and volunteering since they were young teens growing up in Thornhill, Ontario. Free The Children, an international network which has built more than 400 schools in developing countries, was launched by Craig when he was just 12. Craig has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize, and Marc was named one of Canada's Top 40 under 40 in 2003.
D.Roy Kennedy students decided to present the play Human Heart because it focuses on the message that young people can and do make a difference. Teacher Mme.Grivas says the fun-filled musical is a great way to encourage volunteering. The musical which is based on Craig Kielburger’s desire and determination to create change in hopes of helping the underprivileged is a great message for young and old. Kielburger’s dream is to end world poverty and have fun while he is doing it.
There will be many ways to contribute – buy a ticket to the musical, purchase food items, enter a raffle, and join the cake auction. The proud teacher says it will be a night of family fun with excellent entertainment and everyone will feel good about the charities they are helping. Free the Children will donate the money raised to recovery efforts in Haiti. The second charity, Right to Play, teaches underprivileged people all over the world how to be responsible and to be a good leader.
