Students Thank Telus for School Backpacks
September 29, 2010, Ottawa, ON – Students at Sir Winston Churchill Middle School are excited to receive their new school backpacks from Telus on Thursday, September 30 at 11 a.m. This is the second year that TELUS has generously donated backpacks.
Jim Orban, member of the TELUS Community Advisory Board says: "I continue to be impressed by the philanthropy of TELUS. They really invest in the community where impacts are felt the most. TELUS gets children off to a good start with fresh school supplies and backpacks and then they continue to provide transportation for field trips all year long. In partnership with the Education Foundation of Ottawa and other corporate sponsors we are ensuring that no kids are left behind when a field trip is the learning opportunity."
Dr Jane Fulton, executive director of the Education Foundation of Ottawa says: "We know that when children and youth get a good start at school and are included in all the planned activities of learning, the feelings of success help to create the citizenship and leadership that are part of our mission."
This year four corporate sponsors provided more than 900 back packs to children in low income neighbourhoods in Ottawa. These included TELUS, Bell, ING DIRECT Canada and Costco. Private donors provided even more, including an anonymous donor who left packs at the school board office — a true fairy godmother.
