Early Literacy Program

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) welcomes your participation in the Early Literacy Program (ELP).

What Is ELP?

ELP is a language enhancement and early literacy program for junior and senior kindergarten children in both English and French.

How Is ELP Implemented?

Trained volunteer adult readers read quality literature to children, one-on-one, and focus on exploring and developing language, concepts and features of text.

How Are the Volunteers Trained?

Volunteer readers are encouraged to attend an one-hour workshop during which time an in-depth look at ‘what should be done with a book’ is explored. Training of volunteers ensures that all children within the OCDSB experience similar interaction.

What Is the Commitment?
One hour per week, from October to the end of May, is encouraged.

What Schools?
ELP is offered at all schools within the OCDSB.
