Churchill Alternative School Council and Dovercourt Recreation Centre host Dr. Gordon Neufeld

CHURCHILL ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL COUNCIL in partnership with Dovercourt Recreation Centre cordially invites you to a very special fundraising event: An Evening with Dr. Gordon Neufeld, Author of "Hold On To Your Kids" on Thursday, February 16, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Nepean High School Auditorium.

Dr. Neufeld is a Vancouver-based psychologist known for groundbreaking work on peer orientation, peers replacing parents in the lives of our children, and how we can restore parenting to its natural intuitive basis
and the parent-child relationship to its rightful preeminence.

Tickets in advance: $20 per person
Tickets at the door: $25 per person

Parent Involvement Committee is Seeking Members
The OCDSB's Parent Involvement Committee is currently seeking eight (8) Parent Members and three (3) Community Representatives to serve on its Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) for one (1) year or two (2) year terms, effective 01 June, 2012. The PIC works with parents, school councils and community partners to foster parent involvement and community engagement in support of student success. Ottawa-Carleton District School Board 2012 Community Award

The District is seeking nominations for Ottawa-Carleton District School Board 2012 Community Award.

The criterion for the award is:
In recognition of outstanding efforts of a member of the OCDSB community in developing a community initiative that directly supports the well-being of our students. In accordance with the OCDSB procedure, nominations for the Community Award can come forward from the OCASC or school councils directly. Click here to view the nomination form.

Please refer to Procedure PR.621.HR Employee Recognition for information on the nomination process. In accordance with Board procedure, the Chair of the Board will make the final selection for the Community Award. The Community Award will be presented at a Board meeting in the spring.


CHEO in Partnership with the OCDSB - Children 9-13: The In-Between Years
Free information session for parents held at the Adult High School, 300 Rochester St. @ Gladstone on April 16, 2012. The sessions provide trusted information and access to local experts, each covering both physical and mental health topics for specific age groups. 2011-2012 Chamber Players of Canada Concert Series

February 8 - Kerson Leong and Andrew Tunis -
Kerson is a 14-year-old violinist from Ottawa who recently won first prize in the prestigious Menuhin Competition, winning over the best young violinists from around the world, many of whom were 14, 15 and 16 years old.

April 17 - The New Orford Quartet and the Chamber Players of Canada - Made up of concertmasters of the Toronto and Montreal symphony orchestras. In fact, this concert features principal players from five different Canadian orchestras.

New - Odyssey Theatre - Youth Matinee
Every summer Odyssey Theatre presents a Youth Matinee for young
audiences in beautiful Strathcona Park. This year in co-operation with Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre, Odyssey will be presenting 'A Promise is a Promise.' This play is an adaptation of the popular Canadian book by Robert Munsch and Michael Kusugak. It explores Inuit culture and its vibrant narrative traditions. 'A Promise is a Promise' tells the story of a young heroine who discovers what commitment and honesty mean through her attempts to avoid capture by the Qallupilluit, mythical sea monsters of the North.

Performances are Wednesday afternoons (1 PM) on August 1,8,15, and 22, 2012. Strathcona Park is in Ottawa's Sandy Hill neighbourhood (Laurier East at Range Road).*

Youth Matinee costs: ($5/child and $10/adult) (Group rates are also available for groups of 10 or > participants)

* A rainy day alternate location will also be available.

Premier's Safe School Awards
The Premier's Safe Schools Awards recognizes exceptional and innovative work being done in schools to create a safe and caring school environment. This year, ten safe schools teams are being recognized. The award recognizes up to 10 safe schools teams that have demonstrated initiative, creativity and leadership in promoting a safe and inclusive school climate. Learn more by visiting the Ministry's website. The deadline for nominations is February 17, 2012 by 5pm EST.


School Ground Greening Workshops 2011–2012

Toyota Evergreen and the OCDSB are offering free workshops to green your school grounds:
 Join us for a free series of inspiring workshops designed to help you plan a successful and sustainable school ground greening project. Workshops are open to all Ottawa schools and daycares that want to engage their students in creating healthy, stimulating play and learning spaces. Teachers, administrators, parents, custodians, students and community volunteers are all welcome. All workshops run from 7–9pm Lester B Pearson High School, 2072 Jasmine Crescent Gloucester K1J 8M5. Homework Help

The OCDSB, the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Independent Learning Centre are pleased to partner to continue to offer Math Homework Help to students. This free website focuses on providing live one-to-one math help from Ontario-certified math teachers for students taking Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 math. This free tutoring service is available Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Starting soon, your son or daughter may be registered on the Homework Help website at school.

If you wish to register your child at home you will need their OEN number which can be found on their report card or timetable. If you would prefer that your son or daughter not register, please contact your school’s Principal.

Revised Community Involvement Guidelines have been released
Since 1999, one of the graduation requirements for all students in Ontario secondary schools has been to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities. Beginning July 1, 2011, Grade 8 students will be able to start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9. Healthy Schools 2020 Initiative
The OCDSB is one of nine school boards working in partnership with the Champlain Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Network (CCPN). We are creating healthy school environments, and teaching students about the importance of physical activity and making healthy food choices every day. Healthy Schools 2020 workshops co-hosted by the CCPN, public health units, and school boards focused on three priority areas: healthy lunch programs, healthy fundraising, and healthy classroom rewards. Parents/guardians and educators can find a wealth of information and resources on the Healthy Schools 2020 initiative at
