Questions and Answers
Q. I am several courses short of my high school diploma but I have a full time job and a family to support. How can Adult Co-op. Ed. help me?
A. If you are 18 years of age or older and working part-time or full time and not enrolled in a regular high school, you are eligible for this Continuing Education program. If your employer/supervisor is supportive, you can use your current employment to help you earn high school credits. Along with completing weekly log sheets, students complete reflective assignments that are the academic component of the program. Similarly, individuals who volunteer with registered charities or publicly funded institutions may also enroll in the co-op program if the organization’s coordinator of volunteers agrees.
Q. When can I apply and begin the program?
A. The program's registration and startup is continuous throughout the school year.
Q. How many co-op credits might I be able to earn?
A. Each individual’s situation is unique. Individuals can obtain one, two, three or even four co-op credits in a semester. This is dependent on the number of hours in a week an individual typically works. In Ontario, a high school credit is 110 hours in length, thus a co-op student would need to provide logs, verified by the employer, for that length of time to earn one credit. Two co-op credits require 220 hours, three co-op credits require a minimum of 330 hours, and four co-op credits require a minimum of 440 hours.
Q. Why am I asked to provide copies of my academic transcript and resume at the start of the Adult Co-op. Ed. program?
A. Both the Co-op Teacher and the Educational Advisor need this information. Co-op credits must be linked to actual high school courses that have been successfully completed or to a course that is currently being taken at night school. The resume is reviewed by the Co-op Teacher, suggestions for improvement are provided, and your exit resume will become a key summative task The Educational Advisor also makes use of these two documents.
Q. Is there a cost for this program?
A. No. Adult co-op is free.
