Most deaf/hard of hearing students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board are integrated into their community school with their hearing peers.

Assessment Procedures

Speech, language, auditory and academic skills are assessed regularly by Itinerant Teachers of Deaf/Hard of Hearing (ITD/HH). Standardized tests based on a normal-hearing population are administered.

Placement Procedures

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing Integrated Program is for students who have been diagnosed with a sensorineural hearing loss and whose primary method of communication is spoken language.

The student’s audiogram, in conjunction with the results of other assessments, is used to determine the level of service to be provided.

Transportation is provided according to the applicable OCDSB policy.

Program

The therapy provided is based on the auditory-verbal method. The program is available to students in elementary and secondary schools.

Programming is based on the learning expectations outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is developed and coordinated by the special education teacher in consultation with parent(s)/guardian(s), the Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearning, and subject area teachers. An IEP is designed for each student receiving therapy according to their individual learning needs and strengths. This plan is revised and updated based on the results of ongoing assessment and evaluation.

Support is provided to students by Itinerant Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
