Public Consultation
A public consultation process started with a public meeting held June 3, 2010 at Stittsville Public School on Granite Ridge Drive. A Public Meeting Information Package - 3 Jun 2010
was distributed regarding possible attendance boundary, grade structure, and program options. Other schools that may be impacted include A.Lorne Cassidy ES, Castlefrank ES, Goulbourn MS, Katimavik ES, Munster ES, Richmond PS, and Stittsville PS.
Staff is now in the process of compiling and reviewing public feedback/comments received regarding the recommended accommodation scenario presented at the June 3 Public Meeting. This input will inform and assist staff in the preparation of a recommendation report to be presented at the Board's Business Services Committee meeting on October 13, 2010.
Please note all public input is provided to Trustees. The report will include recommendations regarding the New Stittsville Elementary School’s program, attendance boundary and opening grade structure. It will also include recommended changes to existing area schools associated with the opening of the new school.
A Special Committee of the Whole meeting of the Board will follow in November 2010 to receive delegations from the public and for Trustee debate regarding staff's recommendations.
A final decision by Board respecting the study recommendations is also currently scheduled to take place in November 2010.
Background Information
The setting of a boundary and program for the New Stittsville Elementary School will impact attendance boundaries, program offerings, and grade structures for Stittsville Public School and area schools.
June 3, 2010
Parents and interested community members were invited to attend a Public Meeting in the gymnasium at Stittsville Public School (40 Granite Ridge Drive) on Thursday, June 3, 2010 A question and answer session followed a staff presentation on a proposed accommodation scenario.
June 12, 2009
The Ministry of Education approved the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board's request for funding to build a new elementary school in Stittsville to help alleviate current overcrowding at Stittsville area schools and serve future growth on June 12, 2009.
June 22, 2009
Timelines and a consultation plan for a review of future boundaries, program offerings and grade structures in Stittsville and area schools were approved by Board. The accommodation review is necessary to address increasing enrolment pressures and to determine the attendance boundary, grade structure, and program for the New Stittsville Elementary School.
In addition to the opening of a new elementary school, the Board identified the construction of a grade 7-12 secondary school within Stittsville as a future capital priority. Although funding for a new secondary school has not been approved by the Ministry of Education to date. Future accommodation plans should have regard for this project.
Key objectives for the accommodation study include the following:
1. Implement an attendance boundary, grade structure and program offerings for the New Stittsville Elementary School scheduled to open in September 2011.
2. Revise attendance boundaries, grade structures and program offerings for existing area elementary schools in anticipation of the future opening of a new 7-12 secondary school in the Village of Stittsville.
3. Examine the potential for the introduction of a new Middle French Immersion program at a Stittsville area school.
4. Implement Stittsville area elementary school attendance boundaries which account for future introduction of full-day kindergarten Early Learning Program.
5. Examine the need for the provision of child care at the New Stittsville Elementary School.
As the scope of the study encompasses six elementary schools and one middle school, it is likely that accommodation solutions will include attendance boundary adjustments, grade structure and/or program changes involving multiple schools.
A working committee met to discuss potential accommodation solutions for Stittsville and area schools. Representatives from the following schools were invited to join the working committee, A.Lorne Cassidy Elementary School, Stittsville Public School, Castlefrank Elementary School, Katimavik Elementary School, Munster Elementary School, Richmond Public School and Goulbourn Middle School. Also invited were representatives from community associations.
