OCDSB Welcomes 70 Students from Japan for Exchange ProgramIn April, the OCDSB welcomed 70 grade 11 students from Yamate Gakuin High School in Yokohama, Japan for an exchange program presented by the Ottawa-Carleton Education Network (OCENET).

For two weeks, the students attended Cairine Wilson Secondary School, Canterbury High School, Colonel By Secondary School, and Gloucester High School. They participated in a range of activities, including a cultural showcase performance at Gloucester High School, a scavenger hunt day, a trip to Montreal, and a visit to the Mādahòkì Indigenous Experience Farm. Their host families also provided the students an opportunity to immerse themselves in local activities – from hiking to sports, from cooking to trying Timbits.

Leading up to the exchange, OCDSB students and staff took part in sessions that introduced them to Japanese culture and language. They worked in teams to organize events for the exchange students, including a welcome lunch, drumming presentation, and goodbye celebration.
Many of the students are in the OCDSB’s International Certificate Program – a no-fee program designed to recognize students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate a commitment to being motivated, engaged, and active global citizens. These activities count toward the 100 hours of intercultural experiences required to earn the certificate.

This year marked the third Ottawa-Yokohama exchange since the program began in 2016. In the summer, 34 OCDSB students will head to Yokohama for the second phase of the exchange, which will take place over two weeks in July and August.
