Trades & Tech Truck Offers Hands-On Experience in the Skilled Trades

Students from 26 OCDSB schools explored the tools of the trades by visiting the Skills Ontario Trades & Tech Truck. For one week, the truck was parked outside Ottawa Technical Secondary School, giving grade 9 and 10 students an opportunity to experience skilled trades through hands-on activities and simulations. Students learned about a range of career pathways, including welding, painting, automotive, electrical, culinary arts, and design technology.

In the trailer, students could try virtual-reality welding, get behind the wheel of a heavy machinery simulator, check out the circuitry of household electrical systems, find out how fire alarms work, and much more. Skills Ontario staff were on hand to answer questions and provide demonstrations.

CBC News met up with Merivale High School students as they visited the truck:

This experience was part of the Tech & Trade Exploration Week at Ottawa Technical Secondary School. After experiencing the simulations on the truck, students had an opportunity to tour Ottawa Technical Secondary School and discover the wide range of technology and skilled trades learning opportunities available at the school. From cutting-edge precision manufacturing to 3D printing and interactive design technology, the students explored eight distinct skilled trades while learning about career, post-secondary, and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship opportunities.
