Vimy Ridge Public School Students Set Sail on a Virtual Voyage

This March, Vimy Ridge Public School embarked on a week-long virtual cruise, exploring Italy, Peru, India, Kenya and Iceland. Staff created engaging resources for students to learn about each country’s culture and landmarks - from building mini-Colosseums, to learning Swahili phrases, to traversing the Inca trail.

Every morning, the administrative team - Captain Sevigny, Captain Christie and Captain Halsall - shared a video welcoming students to their destination. Educators Ms. Boutziouvis, Ms. Sottile and Ms. Packman collaborated with the whole school to develop a daily slideshow and learning activities including spirit days, crafts and virtual tours.

This was Vimy Ridge Public School’s second virtual cruise. The initiative began in March 2021, with stops in British Columbia, Costa Rica, Hawai’i, Jamaica, and Disney World in Florida. The school hopes to make this an annual tradition.

“This year's cruise was even more successful,” says Principal Sevigny. “We had increased student and class participation, and even had parents contribute to the project. Students were anxious to come to school each day to learn about the next stop on the cruise itinerary. The event brought the whole school together, and was a fun way to learn prior to the March Break.”
