Meet the Indigenous Education Team

The OCDSB First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education team works with students, schools and community partners to:

  • forge strong relationships between OCDSB schools and staff and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in Ottawa;
  • promote First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives as part of daily school life, across the curriculum and throughout the school year;
  • support programming for learning and leadership specific to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students in grades K-12; and
  • create school spaces that are inclusive of and responsive to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, their families, and their cultures.

Professional Development 

  • Understanding intergenerational trauma faced by First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities. Includes how to best support students and best practices for instruction.
  • First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultural competency - ongoing - and in many different venues. Includes understanding of historical trauma.
  • Using talking circles in classrooms as an instructional practice - ongoing with many different sessions.
  • How to incorporate First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives and arts into their teaching of the arts, English and numeracy
  • A First Nations, Métis and Inuit studies subject council plans professional development funded by the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation.

Resources 

  • Indigenous Education Itinerant teacher (K-8) paired with elementary schools to support staff in becoming culturally competent and responsive
  • Books with First Nations, Métis and Inuit content, perspectives and authors provided to all schools and training on using them.
  • Posters and Treaty maps provided to all schools.
  • Assistance in reaching out to and inviting Indigenous elders, knowledge keepers, and cultural teachers into the classrooms.
  • Attendance at many Indigenous community events by teachers, administrators, social workers and all other OCDSB employee groups.
  • An Indigenous staff network exists to support and share experiences.
  • A resource database provided and maintained on our on-line learning platform that can be accessed by all staff.
