The Gender Identity and Supports Available at the OCDSB webinar was held on June 1, 2021 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
This information session helped parents and guardians understand gender identity, gender expression, and support for trans and gender diverse students. Participants heard from Kaeden Seburn, former OCDSB Trans and Gender Diverse Student Support Coordinator, and a panel of local Two Spirit, trans, and nonbinary community organizers and educators.
This event was part of OCDSB’s ongoing commitment to supporting trans and gender diverse students in our District through ongoing staff training, parent and student workshops, virtual drop-in groups and school library texts. For more information and resources, please visit OCDSB’s 2SLGBTQ+ Supports webpage. You can also reach out to your child’s school for more information.
Gender Marker Options
As of January 2021, students are now able to select from four gender marker options when registering for school and updating student registration information. The four gender marker options are ‘Female’, ‘Male’, ‘Prefer Not to Disclose’, and ‘Self-Identified’, which are generated by the Ontario Ministry of Education and are consistent across all school boards in Ontario. The OCDSB acknowledges that all gender identities are self-identified and all students have the right to select the gender marker that fits them best. We are continuing to work towards more accurate and inclusive gender markers for all students and families. To update a current gender marker contact your school office.
