Elections Canada Polling Stations at 10 Secondary, 1 Elementary School

As the largest school board in Ottawa, we recognize that OCDSB schools serve as important community focal points across the city. In some areas, they are the only local sites available that may safely accommodate the public and support the ability of residents to easily vote in the upcoming federal election.

In August, Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, issued recommendations regarding the use of schools for polling stations.

He recommended that only schools that meet the following conditions be considered by school boards and Elections Canada to establish polling stations in schools, particularly in elementary schools:

  • Direct path to location of polling station;
  • There must be separate entrance(s) and exit(s); and
  • Must be able to keep students (including children in licensed child care centres co-located in schools) and staff separate from the public.

The OCDSB will be allowing the use of 11 schools (10 secondary and one elementary) and three additional OCDSB sites as voting locations. We have worked extensively with Elections Canada to significantly reduce the number of locations, particularly in elementary schools, from previous years.

We will be strictly following the recommendations of the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health. Elections Canada staff and members of the public will be kept separate from students and staff (including separate entrances, exits and washrooms). Additional personnel provided by Elections Canada will be responsible for directing the voting public to the appropriate entrance.

In addition, anyone entering the school to vote will be asked to follow all Elections Canada health and safety measures, such as wearing a mask, hand hygiene and keeping a safe distance from others. Areas used as polling centres will be cleaned before students and staff use these locations again.
