In the fall of 2020, the Province of Ontario announced the week of June 25 through July 1 would be proclaimed Somali Heritage Week. This recognizes the economic, political, social and cultural achievements and contributions of Somali Canadians in all aspects of communities across the province.
This week-long period covers several dates of significance in the history of the Somali community. It is an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Somali people and recognize the many contributions Somali Canadians have made here in Ontario. It is estimated that more than 62,000 Somali-Canadians are currently living in Ontario, making the province one of the largest Somali diasporas in the world.
