Growing Literacy with The Reading Partnership

This spring, the OCDSB has continued an exciting collaboration with The Reading Partnership, offering a series of events that guide parents and caregivers through the process of teaching their children to read.

This program, delivered in partnership with the District’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) department, helps build positive reading environments at home while equipping families with the skills and confidence to improve children’s literacy among children aged 4 to 6.

The Reading Partnership for Parents is a 10 week play-based program that aligns with Ontario’s Kindergarten curriculum and incorporates lesson plans that reflect the experiences and strengths of families. It provides families with $200 in learning tools, such as books, flashcards, and materials for learning games.

Parents and caregivers learn how to teach their children foundational reading skills – from letter names and sounds, to simple words, to short stories and songs. First, parents learn together, and then they put their learning into practice with their children.

The program began last spring and has grown to include five schools and over 40 families. This spring, a new cohort of families at Robert E. Wilson Public School and Charles H. Hulse Public School joined the program, along with families from York Street, Carleton Heights and W.E. Gowling who are participating online.

We spoke with some families at Charles H. Hulse Public School and Robert E. Wilson Public School who participated in the program in the fall. Here’s what they had to say about their experience:

Thank you to The Reading Partnership for making this learning experience possible!
