New Ministry of Education Updates
Posted on 09/26/2024

We wanted to update you on some new Policy/Program Memorandums (PPMs) from the Ministry of Education that will affect both parents/caregivers and students in this school year:

Mobile Device Usage

  • Grades 6 and under: Personal mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc.) are not permitted during the instructional day, including recess and nutrition breaks.
  • Grades 7-12: Devices are not allowed during instructional time but can be used during breaks, lunch, or spares. Principals may extend these restrictions for Grades 7-8.
  • Exceptions apply for educational purposes, health needs, or special accommodations.
  • More details and FAQs are available on the OCDSB website.

Guest Speaker Notifications

Starting this school year, schools must notify parents at least 14 days before guest speakers, which is in line with the updated Ministry guidelines.

  • All guest speakers must connect to the Ontario curriculum.
  • Families will be informed of the speaker’s details, topic, and materials beforehand.
  • If the 14-day window isn’t feasible, parents will be informed as early as possible.

Parent Engagement and Communication

Under PPM 170, schools are focusing on strengthening parent engagement. Key updates include:

  • Increased support for parent involvement in school and home activities.
  • Schools must respond to parent inquiries within two business days and aim to resolve them fully within five days.
  • Ongoing updates will be made to communication practices to ensure they meet parents’ needs.
