John McCrae Secondary School Recognized for Strengthening Students’ Math Achievement

With Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement Program

May 9, 2019, Ottawa, ON - The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) recognized John McCrae Secondary School today with the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement Program.  John McCrae is one of just 22 Ontario High School’s being recognized with this honor.

Norah Marsh, Chief Executive Officer, EQAO said, “The way that students view and think about math often influences their academic achievement in that subject. We’re recognizing schools that have looked at data on students’ attitudes and made decisions accordingly to support student learning. These schools’ analyses and initiatives worked, which helped many students succeed."

John McCrae Secondary School was also singled out for the tremendous work of school staff to foster positive attitudes and their use of unique strategies to support students. In addition, students were commended for their demonstrated fulfillment of curriculum expectations. EQAO research suggests that students’ positive attitudes and use of strategies are important factors that support success in math.

Principal Richard King said, “EQAO is a means by which teachers can share curriculum expectations. This is not just about students doing well on testing this is about students doing well in their educational journey. This is about teachers collaborating with one another to find unique, creative, innovative methods to teach mathematics in a way that resonates with students.  I am very proud of our students and staff, not just today when they are being recognized but every day.”

John McCrae Secondary School is a vibrant, energetic high school with a dedicated staff committed to the success of all students. JMSS provides myriad opportunities for students to discover and foster their personal passions in the classroom and through extracurricular activities.
