International Languages Secondary Program

International Language Classes for Secondary Students & Adults

The international languages program gives secondary students and adults the opportunity to learn a new language or to develop and maintain a language other than English or French. These courses are offered at the high school level and are for credit. International Language Classes are FREE for Ontario Residents.

IMPORTANT: International language classes are currently being delivered virtually. We do not know yet whether the classes will move to in-person at Glebe CI.

January - June International Language Classes

Program Duration: January 11, 2022 - June 2, 2022
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings between  5:00-7:30 pm
Languages Offered: Arabic, Czech, Japanese, Spanish

September - June International Language Classes

Registration is closed for September - June International Language Classes.
Registration for our 2022-2023 language classes will open in Spring 2022.

September - June Program Duration (ongoing): September 25, 2021 - June 12, 2021
Time: Saturday mornings between  9:00 am -12:30 pm

Languages Offered: American Sign Language, Arabic, Cantonese, Czech, German, Greek (Modern), Japanese, Norwegian, Persian, Simplified Mandarin, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Vietnamese

Fees, Eligibility and Prerequisites:

Eligibility:

  • The credit language courses are in three levels: BD (grade 10), CU (grade 11), and DU (grade 12). 
  • High school students (grades 9 to 12) and adults are eligible to take the language credit courses
  • Grade 9 students can only register in BD level language courses.  
  • CU and DU level courses have prerequisites (BD and CU respectively).  
  • Students in grade 11/12 who are newcomers and are interested in registering in the age appropriate level without the prerequisite will need to complete a form, provide evidence of credits completed in the target language and be assessed on their language competency.

Fees:

  • International & Out-of-Province students & adults: $500.00
  • Adults Ontario residents (NOT working towards completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma): $50.00
  • Some language courses may require a Textbook deposit ($80.00).  Cash or cheque made payable to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will be accepted.  A refund will be issued to students upon return of the textbook in satisfactory condition at the end of the course.  Textbook refund issues must be addressed within one calendar year of the commencement of the course.  Textbook deposit records are not retained beyond this time period.

Verification for non-OCDSB students:

As per the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines, a verification of residence and citizenship status in Canada should be conducted for the completion of the registration process. Parents & Guardians will be contacted through email to book virtual appointments for the completion of the verification process. Required documents are: 

  • Proof of Address (e.g., Current Property Tax Bill; Current Utility Bill; Home Phone/Cable/Internet Bill. Please note, Driver’s License is not acceptable)
  • Proof of Citizenship and Status in Canada: 
    • Canadian Citizen (Birth Certificate, Passport, Baptismal Certificate)
    • Permanent Resident (Permanent Resident Card, Stage One Approval letter, Equivalent Documentation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirming approval in principle)
    • Refugee Status: Documentation from IRCC confirming status, Consideration of eligibility (Convention refugee)
    • Diplomat Status / Minister’s Permit
    • Student Visa (Study Permit)
    • Visitor Visa (Visitor Record)
  • Copy of their most recent credit counseling summary transcript or student status sheet.
