June 7 Update: Special Air Quality Statement

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for Ottawa remains in the high-risk category according to Environment Canada’s Special Air Quality Statement.

Children, elders and those at risk have been asked to continue to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The general population has also been advised to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities, especially if they experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.

To ensure the safety and well-being of children and staff, schools have been asked to keep students indoors for recess and for any physical education or extracurricular activities that involve strenuous activities.

We have cancelled today’s Junior Region 4 track meet and all secondary school athletics. We will provide more details about upcoming events, once we have more information.

If your child has lung or breathing issues and you have concerns about them participating in outdoor activities today, please contact your school directly. To know if you or your child are at risk due to the prevailing air quality situation, please visit this website.

We will continue to monitor the situation, consult with Ottawa Public Health and other local health partners, and provide updates as the situation changes throughout the week.
