Summer School Grade 6, 7 & 8

Program duration: June 30 - July 23, 2021 (no classes on July 1, 2021)

Daily Schedule:  8:30 am - 11:45 am and/or 12:20 pm - 3:35 pm

Registration: May 3 - June 24, 2021

  • Registration information will be provided by the school your child is currently attending.
  • Students can choose to register in either am, pm or full day options.

IMPORTANT:  Students are required to attend the full summer school program.  Vacations and holidays should not be taken for the duration of the program.

Continuing Education offers academic programs for grade 6, 7 and 8 students that address specific student needs. To be able to register for the programs listed below, students in grades 6, 7, and 8 must be recommended by their school for these programs. Please see below for additional information about each program.

  • In Person Locations:  Jack Donohue PS, Broadview PS, Sawmill Creek ES (yellow bus service available)
  • Virtual Learning (synchronous)for those interested in virtual learning opportunities

ALL PROGRAMS OFFERED ARE BASED ON ENROLLMENT. CONTINUING EDUCATION MAY CANCEL CLASSES DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT.

Summer School “R&R” Review and Reinforcement Grades 6-8

This program is open to any student currently enrolled in grade 6, 7 and 8 in the OCDSB and who meets at least one of the criteria listed below

  • currently achieving below the provincial standard in Language Arts and/or Math
  • currently receiving support as an English Language Learner at Step 1-2 ESL
  • currently receiving support as an English Language Learner at Step 1-4 ELD

What type of learning activities can students expect to take part in?

Students will have opportunities to:

  • connect with an OCDSB teacher to receive full group, small group and/or individualized instruction that focuses on literacy and numeracy gaps.
  • explore a different foundational numeracy topic each week through teacher led activities.
  • receive individual guidance and build foundational literacy skills through teacher lead activities
  • participate in hands on/experiential learning (ELD students)

Class size: 10-15 students / Grade 8 Math Class: Up to 10 students


Summer School Getting Ready for Grade 9

This program is open to any student currently enrolled in grade 8 in the OCDSB and who meets the criteria listed below.

  • currently achieving at the provincial standard in Language Arts and/or Math
  • lacks confidence in academic performance or has learning gaps
  • has been identified by their teacher as a student who would benefit from additional practice and preparation before grade 9

What type of learning activities can students expect to take part in?

Students will have opportunities to:

  • connect with an OCDSB teacher to receive full group and small group instruction that focuses on Language Arts and Math
  • deepen their understanding of key numeracy concepts each week through teacher led activities.
  • get feedback on and further develop their literacy skills, in particular writing skills, each week through teacher led activities.

PLEASE NOTE - this is not a program for students achieving above the provincial standard.

Class size: 15-18 students


Grade 9 Reach Ahead / eLearning Credit Courses (full day classes)

Grade 8 students entering Grade 9 in the 2021-2022 school year have the opportunity to take:

  • Reach ahead credit courses at the Grade 9 level: FIF1D, CGC1DF offered in the Virtual Credit Program and CGC1D offered in the eLearning Program.
