April is Sikh Heritage Month

April is Sikh Heritage Month, an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the history, culture, and many accomplishments of Sikh Canadians.

April is an important month for the Sikh community. Sikh Canadians celebrate Vaisakhi/Baisakhi on April 14th, which marks the creation of the Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith. This holiday is also celebrated by people of the Hindu faith.

This April marks ten years since the month was proclaimed as Sikh Heritage Month in the province of Ontario. Please join us in recognizing the contributions of Sikh Canadians in our district and across the province!

Saturday, April 1, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m: The Mayor will proclaim April as Sikh Heritage Month and the Nishaan Sahib (community flag) will be raised at Ottawa City Hall, remaining up for the entire month of April. There will also be a martial arts performance, hymns sung by students, and the "Sikhs in Canada Timeline" exhibition on display.

Saturday, April 22 - Monday, April 24: Community members and Sikh MPs from across the country will be organizing an Akhand Paath 3-day prayer on Parliament Hill. The prayer will culminate with langar (community kitchen meal) on Monday, April 24th at 11:00 a.m. Khalsa Aid and the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada will have exhibitions on display.
