PA Day: Friday, October 6, 2023
Friday, October 6, 2023 is a Professional Activity Day for OCDSB school staff that focuses on key Ministry Priorities: Student Mental Health and Well-being, Literacy and Numeracy. School staff will attend in-person and participate in presentations, group discussions and collaborative activities facilitated by school administrators.

Topic 1: Student Mental Health and Well-Being- Promoting a Safe and Positive Climate

Elementary and Secondary Learning Objectives Include:
- Educators will reflect on the first month with students and the conditions of safety, belonging, connection and inclusivity.
- Educators will explore the successes and barriers to integrating student mental health and well-being practices into the classroom in the first month of school.
- Educators will clearly identify the strengths and gaps in knowledge, review and update specific goals for the school team and ensure a shared understanding of the school’s vision to support student mental health and well-being.

Topic 2: Literacy and Numeracy

Elementary Learning Objectives Include:
Literacy:
Educators will learn about and/or identify:
- The key areas of revision in the revised Language Arts curriculum, Grades 1-8, the strand structure and the curriculum context.
- French as a Second Language (FSL) educators from K-8 will develop understanding of the following: Understanding the Common European Framework of Reference and how it applies to FSL, targeting foundational literacy skills when teaching FSL, effective assessment practices in the FSL classroom and exploring new FSL resources.
Mathematics:
Educators will learn about and/or identify:
- The Taking Action in Mathematics Framework, with a focus on the first priority action
- High-impact instructional practices within the framework and examine how they inform and enhance effective pedagogy in Mathematics.
- Various assessment tools aligned with the framework to gauge student progress and needs.
- The mathematical developmental continuums in order to tailor math instruction to meet individual students' learning levels and close learning gaps.
Secondary Learning Objectives Include:
Literacy:
Educators will learn to make connections between revised curriculum and the classes they teach by:
- Reviewing the key areas of revision in recently updated secondary curriculum
- Exploring how cross-curricular and integrated learning, considerations for learning and the 7 transferable skills can be embedded into all classrooms
- Exploring how to embed language teaching (and the ENL1W - Strand B: Foundations of Language) into our teaching practice
Mathematics:
Educators will learn about and/or identify:
