PA Day: Friday, November 3, 2023 

Friday, November 3, 2023 is an Elementary Professional Activity Day for OCDSB school staff that focuses on key Ministry Priorities: Student Mental Health and Well-being, Literacy and Numeracy. School staff will attend in-person and participate in presentations, group discussions and collaborative activities facilitated by school administrators.

Topic 1: Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy:

Educators will be engaged in learning to:

  • Explore effective routines for French as a Second Language.
  • Understand reading assessments and establish next steps based on those assessments.
  • Explore the resources available based on the needs of students.

Mathematics:

Educators will be engaged in learning to:

  • Strengthen mathematics content knowledge.
  • Enhance content knowledge using the developmental continuums contained in the Math curriculum.
  • Create a comprehensive math block that models a positive and curious learning environment where students are excited to learn mathematics.

Centering Indigenous Perspectives Across the Curriculum:

Educators will be engaged in learning to:

  • Foster learning environments that center knowing the learners.
  • Center diverse perspectives and Indigenous brilliance.
  • Select appropriate resources (texts) to include Indigenous perspectives.

Student Mental Health and Well-Being:

Grade 7 and 8 educators will be engaged in learning to:

  • Introduce the mental health literacy modules to grade 7 and 8 educators and ensure clear links to current practices and curriculum requirements.
  • Provide resources and helpful information to support the delivery of the mental health literacy modules to students.
  • Explore opportunities for intermediate educators to integrate student mental health activities and resources into everyday classroom learning.

Cybersecurity and online privacy awareness:

Educators will be engaged in learning to:

  • Understand key concepts pertaining to cybersecurity and password hygiene.
  • Explore some tools and resources via a choice board to make that learning relevant to their day-to-day work.
