OCDSB Statement: Threat Against Trustee

The OCDSB is aware that a trustee recently received an antisemitic and transphobic threatening message in response to a decision at a Committee of the Whole meeting on March 7, 2023. This comes in addition to multiple threatening messages the individual has received while serving in the role of trustee.
The OCDSB is a local school board. No trustee or member of our staff should ever receive threats against their life. This is unacceptable and inexcusable. It also threatens the very nature of democratically-elected local government.
Police have been notified regarding the threat. We are also reviewing safety and security protocols (including both police and non-police alternatives) to ensure trustees, staff and members of the public can engage and discuss issues in a safe and respectful manner in compliance with our obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
