OCDSB Statement: Use of flags or symbols of identity

This week, in one of our virtual classes, students were asked not to use political symbols as their avatar image. The principal was instructed to give this direction to students by her Superintendent. Upon reflection and thanks to the thoughtful feedback received from students and parents, the following day the District acknowledged that for many students, a flag may be an important part of their identity. Upon consultation and under the direction of the Superintendent, the principal apologized to the class and also to families for any harm that may have been caused by the District’s actions.

While we will not allow imagery that promotes or symbolizes hate, discrimination or violence, students may express themselves using flags or symbols which represent their identity, background or beliefs. While this was regrettable, we would ask for understanding as school staff are working to navigate an extremely challenging international situation in a way that allows all students and staff to feel safe and supported. These resources are helpful for anyone engaging in these challenging conversations.
