OCDSB students have been recognized through awards, scholarships, and prize-winning efforts in competitions. Here are just a few of the success stories we’re celebrating this month:

Schulich Leader Scholarship
Tanya S. from Glebe Collegiate Institute was the recipient of a prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship,
receiving $100,000 in scholarship funding from McGill University. Nominated for her academic excellence, diverse extracurricular involvement, and strong leadership skills, Tanya's passion lies in quantum optics. Her two-year experience at the University of Ottawa's Structured Quantum Optics lab, including co-op terms, has fueled her commitment to scientific progress. Tanya's personal projects and self-studies in computer science and quantum imaging showcase her interdisciplinary approach and drive for innovation. She will be pursuing an honours degree in physics.

 Ottawa Arts Council Arts Awards
Asha H. from Canterbury High School was the recipient of the Ottawa Arts Council’s 2023 Young Artist Award. Asha is described as a vibrant, motivated, and creative student who would be a wonderful ambassador to other youth. The award recognized Asha’s sculptural work entitled “Mycelium,” which emphasizes our interconnectedness to the natural world.

 Odawa Native Friendship Centre Traditional Pow Wow
At the Odawa Native Friendship Centre’s 44th Annual Traditional Pow Wow, Avery M., a student at Cambridge Street Community Public School, received an award for her dancing at a round dance. Avery demonstrates perseverance and hard work in her Jingle Dancing and takes pride while dancing and teaching her classmates the intricate steps. She has also been practicing dancing with hoops to expand her dance repertoire. The school community looks forward to seeing more of her dancing next year!

 University of Toronto National Book Award, Orléans Outstanding Youth Award, and OPSBA Certificate of Recognition
Gavin H. from Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School has been recognized for his high academics, athletics and outstanding service and leadership. Not only has Gavin effectively balanced his academics and athletics, but he has also dedicated hundreds of hours coaching and mentoring youth. In recognition of these accomplishments, Gavin received the University of Toronto National Book Award, Orléans Outstanding Youth Award, and a Certificate of Recognition from the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA).

 CPA Write To Ignite Competition
Every year, CPA Ontario hosts the Write To Ignite Competition, where students have a chance to submit a slideshow based on the theme for a chance to win cash prizes. Earlier this year, Nareeman A. from OCV Secondary placed third in the competition, winning $200! The competition asked students to make a pitch to the CEO of their favourite company about a change they would like to see. Nareeman’s project was based on the Return of the iPhone Power Adapter.

YPI Cares
West Carleton Secondary School held its annual Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) event in support of local charities in June. Grade 10 Civics students competed to advocate for a charity of their choice to receive a $5,000 grant from YPI. This year’s winner was Ameen A., who supported the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. Congratulations to all of the students involved!
Math League Competition
W. Erskine Johnston Public School students excelled in the Math League Competition, where the grade 4 and 5 teams both finished first in Canada!
- In Grade 5, Woody W. earned first place, and Kevin L., Anika M., Parsa M., and Leon W. tied for second place at the school.
- In Grade 4, Eva L. earned a perfect score, tying for first place in the US/International category. Tiwari A. and Lucas L. earned second place and Joshua Z., Kelly M., and Vickie L. earned third place at the school.
Hop! Spring Challenge
Kindergarten students at Chapman Mills Public School won first place in the Hop! Spring Challenge organized by the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority. They walked 1,785 km this spring, for a total of 3,525 km over the school year – that’s the same as walking from Ottawa to Newfoundland! Their efforts earned the class a $100 prize.
