Earl of March Secondary School student receives Loran Award

Earl of March Secondary School student Tasneem A. has been recognized as a 2021 Loran Scholar, receiving Canada's largest undergraduate merit award.

Tasneem was recognized for her outstanding leadership, commitment and contributions to the school and local community. Tasneem is the president of her community outreach club, which supports the transition for newcomers and refugees into high school. She also actively plans initiatives for a national student organization, established a companionship program at a retirement residence, and initiated a program engaging the special needs community in music. Tasneem also lifeguards and teaches swimming across Ottawa.

Tasneem looks forward to pursuing a Bachelor of Science and volunteering more of her time to the community.

“I would like to thank my teachers and my community for supporting me throughout this process,” says Tasneem. “Especially during a COVID year, they have been more than amazing and supportive.”

Tasneem is joining a cohort of 30 Loran Scholars across Canada out of more than 6,000 applicants. She is one of nine to be selected within Ontario this year.

The Loran Award, valued at $100,000, includes annual stipends, tuition waivers from one of our 25 Canadian partner universities, mentorship, funding for summer work experiences as well as annual retreats and forums. It is granted based on evidence of character, commitment to service in the community, and leadership potential.

Congratulations Tasneem!
