Featherston Drive Public School Class Receives Spirit Bear Award

The R7A class at Featherston Drive Public School was recognized with the First Nations Caring Society's 2021 Spirit Bear Award. This award goes to a group of young people who demonstrate their commitment to reconciliation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Since the start of the school year, the grade 7 class has participated in numerous initiatives, including Orange Shirt Day, Have a Heart Day, Moose Hide Campaign and Secret Path Week. They’ve also taken part in workshops and panel discussions. With the support of homeroom teacher Ms. Conley and other educators, the students get actively involved in their learning, thoughtfully reflect on the impact of the issues, and share their learning with the rest of the school and the broader community.

Upon receiving the $500 Spirit Bear Award prize, the students decided to give back by donating to Mikinakoos Children's Fund, a charity that supports First Nations children in remote northwestern Ontario. The class held a vote, selecting two causes -- they will donate $250 to fund the purchase of warm clothing and $250 to the healthy living program.

Principal Brian Chiasson says, “This group of scholars has spent this whole year brainstorming innovative ways to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. They’ve done so by being resilient and collaborative.”

He hopes that the class’s work ethic inspires other students around them to learn, reflect, and take action. “They understand that they, as individuals, CAN make a difference with their work on reconciliation.”

The Spirit Bear Award is named in honour of Spirit Bear, who is a symbol of reconciliation and equity for kids. To learn more, visit the First Nations Caring Society website.
