Students’ Award-Winning Board Game Makes Financial Learning a Piece of Cake

A dash of financial literacy, a pinch of business planning, and a generous sprinkle of fun – those ingredients came together in an award-winning board game designed by two Canterbury High School students.

Grade 11 students Danika H. and Valentina M. created the game Breadwinner for the My Money, My Future: Canadian Financial Education Challenge hosted by Canadian Foundation for Economic Education and CIBC. Youth across Canada were invited to create new tools and resources to help young Canadians improve their financial knowledge and capabilities.

The game turns 8-13-year-old players into budding entrepreneurs, challenging them to build a debt-free bakery while collecting assets, earning income, and dealing with “burnt buns” – unexpected obstacles. Players can earn points by answering financial trivia questions. A financial handbook is included with the game, allowing kids to dive deeper into their learning.

“Our board game goes through the basic financial topics that are crucial to know in order to be financially free and happy,” say Valentina and Danika. “This includes debt and how to deal with it, credit cards, investments, how to be responsible, the importance of giving back and much more. It also teaches kids the mindsets and practises that they should follow in order to be happy financially and in life.”

The project was offered as an assignment in Danika’s Marketing class. She partnered with Valentina, who is in the Business Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, to develop the game together, with support from their teacher, Mr. Allen.

Breadwinner rose to the top among over 3,000 submissions from across Canada, earning the team a $10,000 prize.

Danika and Valentina hope the board game will educate kids, spark important conversations, and help youth think about finance in a fun and positive way. They are looking for opportunities to start producing the game as a teaching tool for schools.

Congratulations Danika and Valentina on this outstanding example of our Culture of Innovation!
