Celebrating Olympic Success at the OCDSB

Over the past two weeks, we’ve seen outstanding displays of skill, perseverance and sportsmanship from Team Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics – including some amazing OCDSB alumni who competed in the games. Learn more about these incredible athletes, and see how activities in our schools are inspiring a new generation of budding Olympians!

OCDSB Alumni at the Games

Speed skater Isabelle Weidemann, a graduate of Colonel By Secondary School and Henry Munro Middle School, became the first Canadian athlete at the 2022 games to earn a medal, winning bronze in the 3,000 metre skate. Her 5,000 metre skate earned her a silver medal. Finally, Isabelle and teammates, Ivanie Blondin and Valérie Maltais, earned Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the women's team pursuit! Isabelle was the flagbearer for Team Canada at the Closing Ceremony.

The Canadian Women’s Hockey team had their gold-medal moment when they won a 3-2 victory while competing with the United States. The team included OCDSB alum Jamie Lee Rattray, who attended Castlefrank Elementary School, Katimavik Elementary School, and Earl of March Secondary School.

We cheered on many OCDSB alumni at the Games. Cairine Wilson grad Rachel Homan competed in curling, former Huntley Centennial student Mason McTavish played on the mens hockey team, and Merivale alum Mirela Rahneva competed in skeleton. Siblings Hannah Schmidt and Jared Schmidt, graduates of West Carleton Secondary School, represented Team Canada on the slopes in freestyle skiing and ski cross. Glebe graduate Cody Sorensen raced as part of the Canadian bobsleigh team.

Congratulations to all of these outstanding athletes – we are so proud of your achievements!

Olympic Spirit at Our Schools

Many classes across the OCDSB got into the spirit of the Games by learning about winter sports, inspiring athletes, and the history of the Olympics. Check out the learning activities that took place at our schools:
