Throughout the District, educators are engaging students in innovative projects to build Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills. From coding programmable robots to testing scientific hypotheses, here’s a look at how students are putting our Culture of Innovation in action.
Creative Coding
Classes across the OCDSB are using innovative tools and apps to dive into the world of coding and robotics:
Making Strides in Math
OCDSB students are applying their math skills to classroom activities, games and competitions. Congratulations to the grade 6 students at W. Erskine Johnston Public School for placing first in the Canadian National Mathematics League Math Contest, and to the grade 6 class at Bayshore Public School for earning the Knowledgehook banner in math!
Solutions for Sustainability
Students are applying their STEM skills to come up with solutions for real-world needs. At Kanata Highlands Public School, students made prototypes of robots that could clean up pollution on beaches. At Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School, students are using aquaponic systems to grow healthy food in their school - an initiative in partnership with Farm2Cafeteria and the Ottawa Network for Education.
All About Animals
From the world of dinosaurs, to the Toronto Zoo, to our OCDSB Outdoor Education Centres - students are exploring the animal kingdom through virtual field trips and class activities.
Hands-On Science
Across the OCDSB, classes are experimenting, designing, researching and building. Here’s a look at some of the scientific inquiry happening in our schools:
