For the Win: Celebrating Student Success

Over the past few months, OCDSB students have been recognized through awards, scholarships, and prize-winning efforts in national competitions. Here are just a few of the success stories we’re celebrating:

Sir Robert Borden High School: Schulich Leaders Scholarship

Josh G. was the recipient of a prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship, receiving $80,000 in scholarship funding for his upcoming studies at McGill University. Every year, the Schulich Leaders program awards scholarships to 100 entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) program. Josh was nominated for his outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements at Sir Robert Borden High School, Ottawa-Carleton Virtual Secondary School and in the community over the last four years. He will be pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Life Science, focusing on Neuroscience or Biochemistry. Congratulations Josh!

W. Erskine Johnston: Math League Contest

Students at W. Erskine Johnston recently participated in the Math League Contest, testing their skills while competing with students from across Canada and the U.S. The grade 6 students finished 1st in Canada, while the grade 4 and 5 students placed 2nd and 3rd in Canada, respectively. What an amazing accomplishment!

Merivale High School: Canada-Wide Science Fair

Merivale student Ria P. earned recognition at the Ottawa Regional Science Fair. Her entry “BlueViolet: a wearable eye-health monitor to counter unseen health effects of Covid-19” won Best in Fair and Best in Age Category. Ria designed a wearable and interactive eye health monitoring device that uses biometric data to prompt computer users to take screen breaks and improve their posture. Way to go, Ria!

Glebe Collegiate Institute and Lisgar Collegiate Institute: Reach for the Top

This month, quiz teams from Glebe and Lisgar took 1st and 2nd places in the National Finals of the "Reach for the Top" quiz competition. Reach for the Top is a Canada-wide academic quiz competition for high school students. Their Schoolreach program provides opportunities for teams of students to represent their schools in a fast-paced quiz challenge testing their knowledge and speed of recall. Well done to all the competitors!

Osgoode Township High School: Esports Canadian RocketLeague Championships

In May, Osgoode Township High School had a strong showing at the Esports Canadian RocketLeague Championships. The Panthers played against the best high school teams across Canada. The school’s A division team (Derrick C., Jeffery H., and Michael F.) won first place in Canada, taking the title of Grand Canadian Champion. The AAA team, led by Jamie A. with teammates Ryan P. and Edwin M., came in second place across Canada. Congrats to all of the students!

Looking Back at a Year of Achievement

Recently, we announced the recipients of the 2021-2022 Student Recognition Awards. Each year, these awards celebrate excellence in student leadership. Students are chosen by their principals and vice-principals for their demonstration of initiative, supported by the will to succeed, the dedication to finish what they started, and the commitment to achieve their personal best.
