OCDSB statement - Assault Against Student

On Friday, Gloucester High School school was made aware of an assault that occurred off of school property involving a student. The student was assaulted by a group of individuals. This unacceptable and senseless act of violence was recorded and posted to social media. The video and many rumours are circulating on social media.

On learning of the assault, the school contacted the Ottawa Police Service and is cooperating with the police investigation. The school is also undertaking an investigation. While we cannot comment on the details of the investigation, we can share that there is no evidence that the perpetrators were Gloucester students.

The school has been in touch with the student and is also working to support the student and their family. Gloucester High School also has access to a wide range of student support services, including counsellors, youth workers, and other professionals from our Learning Support Services department. All available resources will be leveraged both for the student involved, and for the school community as needed.

We encourage members of our community to respect the privacy and dignity of the student who was assaulted and avoid speculation on social media. If anyone has any information they would like to share, they are encouraged to contact the Ottawa Police Service: https://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/contact-us/find-a-police-station.aspx?_mid_=2025

Understandably, this assault has generated a considerable amount of concern within the community. We share this concern and are continuing with a school-based investigation and supporting the police investigation. The behaviour witnessed in the video is disturbing and serves as an unfortunate reminder of the importance of our work to continue to build a safe and caring school culture in which the human rights, dignity and respect of every member of our school community is prioritized. Our Safe Schools policies were recently updated to ensure that everyone can feel safe at school. This is the responsibility of all members of the OCDSB community.
