National Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day

On Friday, September 30th, OCDSB students and staff members will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

This is a day of mourning and remembrance for Indigenous people. This date also offers an important opportunity to reflect and to honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

September 30th is a federal holiday, but is not a statutory holiday in Ontario. Schools will be open with learning activities to mark the date taking place. However, Indigenous families may decide to keep their children home on that day to engage in activities with family and community. Indigenous self identification is a confidential process and should not be understood as a requirement for students or staff to be away from school on this important day. There is no expectation that students who are away from school on this day participate in any school-related activities. Teachers have also been asked to not schedule tests or make assignments due on September 30th.
