W.E. Gowling Public School Prepares to Celebrate 75th Anniversary

At W.E. Gowling Public School, preparations are in full swing to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary this fall. On October 6th, current staff, families, students, and invited guests will be opening the school’s time capsule for the first time since 1996! Carrying on the tradition, this year’s students will place new items in the capsule to be opened in another 25 years.

W.E. Gowling Public School was originally built in 1946 for the newly constructed neighbourhood established for veterans following the Second World War. It was named after Wesley Ernest Gowling, a dedicated trustee of the Ottawa Public School Board from 1909 to 1955. The school went through an expansion in 1949 and then an addition in 1952 as the Carlington community began to grow.

Today, W.E. Gowling Public School is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 school offering the English and Early French Immersion programs. It has a student population of 437, and students are known as the Gowling Griffins. The school continues to be a place of diversity and belonging, where students are supported, nurtured, and encouraged to do their best.

The anniversary of the school’s opening took place in 2021, with the in-person celebration postponed until 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. All former staff, students, and community members are welcome to drop in at the school on October 6th from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You will have the opportunity to view artifacts from the time capsule and tour the history of the school through the decades, with photos and items on display.

quote

We are eager to see the treasures that have been locked away in a box in the wall of the school. We hope you can join us for this momentous evening to be a part of history and perhaps see former colleagues and students from your time at Gowling.” - Iria Golding, Teacher
