York Street Public School Invites Community to 100th Anniversary BBQ Celebration

The York Street Public School community is getting ready to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary with a series of events and activities this year. The kick-off event invites families, staff, alumni, and community members to join a free barbecue celebration:

Location: York Street Public School (310 York St, Ottawa, Ontario)
Date
: Saturday, October 15, 2022
Time
: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The celebration is organized in partnership with Ottawa Community Housing, Lowertown Community Resource Centre, Councillor Mathieu Fleury, and Lowertown Community Association. The event will include Junkyard Symphony and activities for all ages.

Located in the Lowertown area of Ottawa, York Street Public School was originally built in 1921 to support the arrival of Jewish newcomers to the area, and it welcomed a diverse community, including French, Irish, and Jewish Canadian students. The school was built in the Collegiate Gothic style of architecture, and it was recently designated under the Ontario Heritage Act for its heritage value.

Today, the York Street Public School community includes 231 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Downtown Ottawa has seen a lot of change over the last 100 years. Throughout this time, York Street Public School has welcomed generations of families and continues to be a place where everyone is welcome.

The anniversary of the school’s opening took place in 2021, with the in-person celebration postponed until 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The school community is excited to come together to celebrate this milestone. Students are also working on selecting objects for a time capsule, to be sealed until the school’s 125th anniversary.
