Carson Grove Elementary School was one of four Canadian schools to participate in an announcement marking the opening of Government of Canada’s consultations to seek feedback on a national school food policy.
On November 16th, the school hosted the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier. They held a press conference announcing the launch of an online questionnaire to build towards a national school food policy that will help guide the expansion of school food programs in Canada to help set children up to reach their full potential.
As part of the visit, the grade 4/5 class participated in a question-and-answer session with Minister Gould and Minister Fortier, where they spoke about the levels of government and their areas of responsibility. The announcement offered students a unique first-hand opportunity to learn about public consultations and policymaking.
Through a virtual meeting, the class connected with students at St. John Bosco School in Newfoundland and École Ludger Duvernay in Montreal. OCDSB Director Camille Williams-Taylor and Carson Grove Elementary School staff joined representatives from Breakfast Club of Canada and the Ottawa Network for Education for the event.
The questionnaire invites input from all Canadians who have experience with, or an interest in, school food policy and programming in Canada to share their feedback by December 16th, 2022.
