Blossom Park Students Explore the Trades Through Teamwork

Grade 2-4 students at Blossom Park Public School recently had the opportunity to try out the trades through a two-day experience in partnership with the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and the District’s Innovation and Adolescent Learning Department.

On the first day, students took part in an interactive culinary presentation by Daley Solomon, who shared his pathway to becoming a professional Chef at Parliament Hill. Mr. Solomon spoke about attending the Cordon Bleu Culinary Culinary Arts Institute in Ottawa, where he learned the many techniques he uses in his career. Students had many questions: “What is your favorite dish to cook? Who are the famous people you have cooked for?”

Inspired by the presentation, the classes worked collaboratively in small groups to make brownies. Mr. Solomon shared his advice on how to properly follow each step in a recipe and be proud of the end result, no matter what!

On the second day, the classes explored the world of carpentry. Students applied problem-solving skills as they used kits to construct bridges and electrical cars. “This is really neat to build something,” students said, “I can’t believe we built a car!” They enjoyed the process so much, there were calls to “take it apart and make it again!”

This trade experience was an opportunity for students to learn hands-on, discover future career pathways, and develop leadership skills through collaboration. “This was a wonderful experience for our primary students to work collaboratively together within our class,” said teacher Ms. Sharma. Here’s a look at the students’ learning in action:
