Bright Futures in Business: Students Sweep OBEA Business Awards

Students from Canterbury High School and OCV Secondary earned top spots at the Ontario Business Educators’ Association (OBEA) Student Business Awards in 2022, bringing home more than half of the awards from across the province! Canterbury students recently organized a reception to celebrate the success of these outstanding recipients.

Every year, the Ontario Business Educators’ Association hosts student competitions to help promote the growth of business education throughout the province. At Canterbury, Business teacher Trevor Allen structures these competitions into classroom assignments and summatives, giving students an opportunity to apply their learning toward experiential projects and real-world scenarios.

Many award winners entered the contest as part of their coursework, while others decided to participate on their own time. Many of the students were in Canterbury's Specialist High Skills Major for Business, and this experience allowed them to earn valuable industry sector-recognized certifications. Others are Arts students, who are learning entrepreneurship strategies to support their creative endeavours.

The projects tapped into a wide range of skills – students analyzed how companies can expand to international markets; learned about stocks and savings accounts; tackled ethical case studies; conducted market research; and more. Some students came up with their own start-up ideas, including a custom sticker business and a tool that provides music recommendations.

In May, the award recipients gathered to celebrate their success. The grade 11 Entrepreneurship class collaborated to plan a reception event at Canterbury High School, where the awards were presented to students, alumni, and staff.

OBEA recognized Trevor Allen with the Award of Merit, for promoting and increasing awareness of Business Studies. Cheryl Taylor, Business Teacher at OCV Secondary, received the Innovative Business Education Teacher Award, which recognizes an outstanding business educator who is dedicated to teaching and students.
