Brookfield High School Showcases Nature in Collaborative Eco Mural
Posted on 06/27/2023
Brookfield High School students created an Eco Mural to showcase the beauty, richness, and biodiversity of the local natural environment. Students in Science, English, Visual Arts, Music, Media Arts, and Foods classes, along with the school’s Eco Team, worked with MASC artist Nicole Belanger to bring their vision to life. This project was made possible by the District’s Innovation and Adolescent Learning department.
Collaboration was at the heart of this initiative. Science students and members of the Eco Team club began by researching native species of plants, animals, and insects. They shared their findings with Art students in grade 9-12, who created a three-dimensional scene using watercolour and wool mixed media techniques. A large-scale photograph of their artwork was printed on wallpaper film and installed in the cafeteria.
The mural inspired outside-the-box thinking as students shared their unique skills and knowledge to bring the artwork to life. They wrote reflections, interviewed their classmates, and photographed their progress. Music students created a soundscape to complement the project, which was unveiled to the school community at the spring Art Night.
