2023-2024 Back to School Highlights

On September 5th, we were happy to welcome students back to class at 146 schools across the district. Classrooms were buzzing with excitement as students connected with staff, made new friends, and dove into another year of learning.

Schools kicked off the year with community-building and collaborative activities. Students and staff discussed values, character traits, and goals for the year ahead.

Director of Education Pino Buffone celebrated the first week of school by visiting Shingwàkons Public School and Charles H. Hulse Elementary School.

This year, we welcomed 420 new and 200 returning international students representing 31 countries, in partnership with the Ottawa Carleton Education Network. The students launched their year with an orientation event featuring speakers, workshops, a drumming session, and volleyball at Britannia Beach.

Across the District, students embarked on their new learning journey – from play-based learning in kindergarten, to engaging activities like phonetics puzzles and music lessons.

We are grateful for all the support that families, staff, and students provided to help the return to school go smoothly. Throughout the year, we will share more stories of how schools are supporting student learning, well-being, and social responsibility. Be sure to follow along on our Classroom Chronicles page!
