Learning Across Borders: OCDSB Hosts 39 Exchange Students from Provence, France
Posted on 11/15/2023
Sixteen
schools across the OCDSB welcomed students from Provence, France for
five weeks of learning, connection, and cross-cultural experiences. This
year’s group of 39 exchange students arrived in October, immersing
themselves in learning and exploring what Ottawa has to offer.
This visit was the latest chapter in a reciprocal exchange organized by the Ottawa-Carleton Network for Education (OCENET) with our partner district in France. The exchange began in 2018 and restarted last year following a pause due to the pandemic.
With support from OCDSB students and host families, the visiting
students developed their English language skills, gained an
understanding of Canadian culture, and had the opportunity to experience
many aspects of Canadian life – from exploring local attractions, to
celebrating Halloween, to enjoying tasty treats at Tim Horton’s.
Students participated in several whole-group activities including attending a hockey game, taking in the fall colours at the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre, and joining a group dinner organized by OCENET.
In March, the exchange will continue when OCDSB students make the
journey to Provence to study at 6 different high schools, enhance their
French-language skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for another
culture and way of life.
