West Carleton Secondary School Students Raise $147,000 at Relay For Life

What happens when 550 dedicated students come together for a cause? At West Carleton Secondary School's recent Relay For Life, they raised $147,000 for cancer research, breaking their previous school record!

On May 30th, the school came together for a day-long event organized by students, which sent a powerful message of hope and solidarity. The day began with an opening ceremony, featuring addresses from the student organizing committee and an Honourary Survivor. This year, West Carleton teacher Kathleen Daley shared her personal journey, underscoring the profound importance of the Relay For Life mission.

Following a moving Survivor’s Lap, the event shifted into a celebration of community spirit. Teams ensured at least one member continuously walked the track, while other participants engaged in a variety of activities, including live entertainment by talented student performers, races, games, face-painting and more.

The success of this event is a testament to the students' hard work and commitment. Grade 11 student Yaseen H. emerged as the top student fundraiser, collecting approximately $3,500. His strategy involved connecting with as many people as possible and emphasizing that “even a small amount adds up.” Yaseen told West Carleton Online, “You never know when you’ll have another chance to make such a big difference in people’s lives.”

As the Relay For Life committee's sponsorship captain, Grade 12 student Chelsea P. oversaw extensive preparations, including regular meetings and months of meticulous planning. Chelsea said, “It just shows how much of a community West is. … We had every single grade participating pretty much, this year. It just feels really cool, and it’s just really nice everyone’s come together as a school for this cause.”

This year’s total marks an impressive leap from West Carleton’s 2023 Relay, where they raised $100,000. In addition to donations from the school community, many community members, partners and local businesses generously contributed.

The West Carleton Secondary School Relay For Life event serves as a powerful example of student leadership and collective action, demonstrating the impact a dedicated school community can have on a vital cause.
