Celebrating the Grand Opening of Mino Mikan Elementary School

On June 11th, 2025, Mino Mikan Elementary School proudly hosted its official opening ceremony. It was a day filled with community spirit, bringing together students, staff and local representatives to mark this special occasion.
Mino Mikan, a name that translates to “the good path” in the Algonquin language, was reflected throughout the day's events. This name, thoughtfully chosen in collaboration with students, families, staff and community with guidance from Algonquin Elder Albert Dumont, represents the journey of learning, growth and positive contributions that awaits every child within these walls.
The celebration began with student-guided tours of the new school at 820 Miikana Road. Student Ambassadors eagerly showcased the collaborative learning spaces, highlighting the impact of the $19.2 million investment from the Ontario government. Construction of the school began in 2023, and it welcomed over 520 Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and staff in September 2024.
An assembly followed, featuring reflections from Algonquin Elder Albert Dumont and speeches by Director of Education Pino Buffone, MPP George Darouze, Trustee Jennifer Jennekens, Principal May Tannous and School Council Chairs Tabassum Khan and Khadija Chhil-Jafferjee.
The talented school choir performed several songs, and attendees enjoyed a video presentation titled “Our Story... The Good Path.” The ceremony concluded with the choir singing the school song and a ribbon-cutting.
Later that evening, families were invited back to the school to explore the vibrant student artwork displayed throughout the school hallways.
Mino Mikan Elementary School embodies its name, providing a positive beginning and opening many doors for students as they embark on a journey towards learning, growth and contributing to their community.
